JOIN SPECIAL GUEST JENNA MCGUIRE AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE MARINE HERITAGE OF THE HISTORIC SAUGEEN MÉTIS
From fur trading voyageurs sailing the waters of the Sweetwater Sea to fishermen, boat builders and lighthouse keepers the Saugeen Métis people have had a strong connection to the waters and islands of Lake Huron for over two centuries. Discover their marine culture and their connections to the Fishing Islands in the best way possible, aboard a boat and on the water! We will bring aboard replica artifacts, family stories and some Métis bannock to try!
This tour will be led by our special guest, Historic Saugeen Métis Councillor and Culture Keeper, Jenna McGuire.
The Historic Saugeen Métis is a distinctive Aboriginal community that descended from the union of European settlers and native women. After the Hudson’s Bay Company merged in 1821 with the North West Company, the Metis people came down into the lake from the west. They did significant trading here up into the 1850s. They celebrate their 200’s anniversary of their presence in the region, this year. Their community, according to the organization, covers more than 275 kilometres of shoreline from Tobermory to south of Goderich.
Jenna McGuire is a scientific illustrator with a background in ecology, heritage interpretation, Métis culture and traditional skills. Jenna’s ability to communicate the salient points of the past and present culture of the Historic Saugeen Metis in our region, and her knowledge of Great Lakes ecology will inform and delight you. Jenna’s previous roles have included Non-Personal Media Officer, Interpretive Coordinator, Resource Management Technician-Aquatic Ecology and Acting Visitor Experience Manager at the Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Come aboard our comfortable pontoon boats and be transported to another time on the Great Lakes.
