Bagida-Waad Alliance is On Board: Climate Change and Fishing
For the last ten years, the commercial fishers of Georgian Bay and Lake Huron have noticed changes in the waters, their catch and the climate. The indigenous fishers of our region say that from their historical memories and intimate knowledge of the fishing grounds, they know that what is currently happening is not part of a cycle but that something is wrong.
Chippewas of Nawash fishing families founded a not-for-profit corp to do research on the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, to encourage youth to hear the stories of the Elders about the fish & to do more active stewardship of the lands & waters.
Join fishers Andrew and Natasha Akiwenzie of Bagida-waad Alliance and Bruce Peninsula Boat Tours to hear the perspective of Nawash fishing families. This 1.5 hour tour of the Fishing Islands will be the backdrop to consider traditional knowledge and fishing,
